Taming the Federal Beast (continued)

The Founders believed that the primary means for keeping a reign on the central government would come from the People. I know the following quote is long, but I highly recommend you read it all the way through in order to not only get a glimpse into the wisdom of the Founders, but so you will also understand why the spiritual demise of the People has brought us to where we are today.

This comes from Noah Webster in his Advice to the Young:

When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers, just men who will rule in the fear of God. The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect their duty, and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for the public good, so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded. If a republican government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws.

This, of course, points us back to the spiritual foundation of our nation and the consequences of what happens when that foundation is compromised. Until we change the spiritual state of the citizenry, this balance of power will remain tilted and problematic because the People will continue to vote selfishly and will not be interested in putting “men who fear God” into office.

And here, with great sadness, we must point a finger at ourselves as well. In the major elections of our recent past, less that half of the evangelical Christians bothered to vote. This to me is unconscionable and sinful. As Webster put it: we are “neglecting the divine commands”. The Body of Christ must awaken to this responsibility.

But if, in the near term, the People are either not willing or able to tame the Federal Beast, then who will? Who can?

I think the only possibility resides with the Governors of the States.

The States formed the Federal Government and, therefore, they must be the ones to call it to task. I believe that could actually happen now. Consider the possibility that a Council of Governors might gather together for the sole purpose of crafting a warning to the Federal Government that they are no longer going to tolerate judicial or executive tyranny. This would be monumental and send a powerful signal that the Federal Government is not without accountability in this nation.

That warning must be backed up with Constitutional Amendments. As much as we may not want to go through this difficult process, it is time, and imperative, for all of us to recognize the reality that the “Rules” must be tweaked, in some cases severely, to get the game back in balance. Those Amendments would seek to remedy that imbalance, such as the following: (for a deeper discussion see The Balance of Powers Act)

  1. Acknowledge a Council of Governors that would provide external accountability for the Federal Government with the power to nullify federal actions when they are deemed outside of the limits of the Constitution.
  2. Return lawmaking to Congress only, as the Constitution currently requires, but is ignored. This would strip the Executive Branch and the Federal Agencies of making orders or regulations that carry the force of law. If the Executive or Agencies want a law enacted, let them go through the Constitutional means to do so.
  3. Force the Federal Judiciary into unanimous decisions only and only in a Court of multiple judges. No sole Federal Judge rulings would be allowed.
  4. Separate the power to tax and spend. We currently have the fox in the henhouse. The Federal Government must be stripped of the power to tax and that power turned over to the States, raised under fixed limits to control federal spending and then forwarded to the U.S. Treasury.
  5. Congress must be forced to pass a balanced budget by September 1st and federal expenditures limited to its average revenue of the previous five years.
  6. The use of Federal armed force, in any form or by any federal agency, can never be used within a State, against a State, or against a citizen of the United States unless that citizen is found to be fighting for a foreign enemy on foreign soil. The use of armed force, within the United States, is reserved to the States. The use of federal armed forces within a State may be used only at the invitation and request of the Governor of that State.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with any of these proposals, something must be done and soon. I make this appeal to those who are on both sides of the aisle. Both have to recognize the insane path we are walking. When the President and the Federal Government thumb their nose at the authority over them, do not be deceived, for that disrespect of authority will eventually spread all the way down, through officials and clerks, and eventually to the streets and we will reap an ugly harvest of a culture burning in deep chaos. This is an issue that faces all of us as citizens and requires us to put away party divisions and stand together for the health and preservation of the nation.

Unfortunately, the imbalance of power within the Republic has become so severe and so critical, and the Federal Beast grown so large and unaccountable, that I am convinced that the only means of recovery lies with the Governors of the States.

But what will cause the Governors to act when they have not acted up to this point?

Prayer and due diligence by the remnant.

First: We must go on our knees in confession and repentance…personally and corporately, confessing our personal sins before Him and the corporate sins of this nation. If God is gathering His forces against us, as He was against Nineveh, then this is the only thing that will stay His hand.

Second: We must act. This is not the time to be timid. This is a time to implore God for wisdom and strength and courage, for we are going to stand against a Beast that will not take kindly to any action that reduces its might and power.

Begin the conversation with your neighbors. Begin the conversation in your community and your church, with your family and your friends. Begin the conversation with your state legislature and finally, with your Governor, for that is ultimately where the taming of the Beast will have to come. For this, the Governors will require great wisdom and great courage.

Humanly speaking, however, all of this will only happen if there is a ground swell from the People, and that ground swell must be initiated by the prayers and actions of the remnant. If the Lord answers our prayers and petitions and He looks favorably upon our diligent actions and stirs the heart of His people in this great land, then we may see a modern miracle of a nation turning back from the brink of its demise, humbling themselves and turning from their wicked ways, and then watching with awe and wonder as the Lord forgives our sins and heals our land.

Soli Deo Gloria…in all things and all circumstances.
