“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. (John 18:38, NIV)

Many have stated that this is the greatest question that could ever be raised.

We do not know how Pilate asked it… whether it was spit out with a mocking disdain that questioned the reality of truth itself or it was more contemplative, wondering if it were even possible to answer such a thing.

But the question was framed improperly. Not that Pilate could have known this, for he could not. The proper way to ask this question of all questions is: “Who is truth?” for Jesus had made it clear that truth was found, not in philosophical musings or the contemplations of a guru, but in a Person.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6, NAS, emphasis added)

Yes, it is true that Jesus said “You word is truth” (John 17:17) and indeed we have been blessed with the reality that God has spoken to us and has graciously provided His word in written form. But we cannot forget this:

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us… (John 1:14, NAS)

Jesus is the Word. He is the Truth. Truth is found in the Person of Jesus Christ…
