Who? Who Are You?

There are several great horned owls that live near our house in the Black Forest. The last couple of late evenings and early mornings they have been “who-ing” right outside our bedroom. Maybe it was the edge of sleep or maybe it was just a run-away imagination, but it sounded like they were repeating the same thing over and over again: “Who? Who are you?”

Last week, I participated in a debate regarding whether or not one could lose their salvation. For me, the heart of the argument, as in virtually every theological issue, is: “Who is God and who is man?” These form the two foundational questions of every worldview. Get these wrong and your worldview will be skewed from the beginning. Attempts to answer the second without the first will be perilous, for without the proper understanding of who God is, we will be prone to not only elevate ourselves well beyond what is true, but flounder around on a sea of tumultuous speculation... often self-centered speculation.

Much like the real pandemic that grips our nation: a loss of true human identity.

When people exchange the truth of God for a lie, one of the fundamental truths they lose is who they really are. No longer made in the image of God, the human soul is emptied of any true worth and significance. It longs to be someone, anyone, who really matters. In the eternal history of supposed random forces in which matter and energy somehow spit out a “you”, one among trillions times trillions of random living nothings that arise like a blip and then die and pass into eternal oblivion, one is left with a deep sense of insignificance. But the reality is that the human soul is more than random animated matter. It longs for what has been lost and chases desperately for something, anything that will fill the ache of the soul’s void.

Hence, our current crisis in which we have so quickly forsaken our “imago dei” birthright and latched upon some finite identity, like “I am black” or “I am gay” or “I am trans” or “I am woman!” as Reddy sang.

Who are you?

Do you think of yourself first and primarily as one of the many “classes” that have been created today? There are at least 76 genders with which our culture will let you identify. Is your significance found in this identity? If you make your identity that which is really nothing more than an adjective, you are settling for something way short of what God had intended for you. One of the pitiful consequences of grabbing onto an identity that will soon turn to dust or ash is that we must loudly proclaim it or promote it to everyone as if we know it is insignificant in itself but we must embellish it, parade it, force it and demand the world around us gives us significance because of my adjective.

Because the truth is, an earthly adjective will never fill the hole in the soul.

To be sure, we are being inundated with a worldview in our culture that is enticing us as an angel of light to do just this. But, as with all his lies, it will become a snare in the end.

At a strong Christian school, I recently asked the elementary faculty what the key issue was in their students’ lives. Without hesitation: gender identity. At the youngest of ages, kids are being taught from all quarters in our nation that the most important thing they need to pursue is their gender identity. “Find your true inner self! Shout it, flaunt it! Make the world acknowledge it! This is where your significance is found. It is here you will find peace and contentment.

And it is all a lie.

The worldview that is seeping into our culture is one that is bent upon dividing us, pitting manufactured “oppressed” classes against manufactured “oppressor” classes. If you are discerning, you will see this constant and persistent theme everywhere in our society today. It whispers into the hearts and minds of someone that their identity, the reality of who they are, is bound up in their skin color, their sexual choices, their ethnicity, their economic status, etc. and the social systems are stacked against that identity. Many, therefore, now see their identity as first black, or female, or Hispanic, or gay, or trans, or pans, or 2S, or queer, or liberal, or progressive, or conservative, or some other human, earthly attribute.

In Meo-Christianity, this has taken on a similar, yet somewhat pious, form. My identity is… “me!” Rather than a child of God, my identity is so very, very preciously all about me and who I am… my inner thoughts and musings, my longings and desires, my faults and tragedies and triumphs. I am! Don’t you want to read about me in my blogs and tweets and twitters? My goal in life is to get ever so much more in touch with the real me.

Many people think of Christianity as a religion or worldview, a way to think about life or a way to think about after-life. Or Christianity is a lifestyle or something I do on Sundays or the default of being raised in a certain family or a certain community.

But, for those who are in Christ, our identity is first and foremost a new creature in Christ. We are no longer who we were. We have truly been “born again”, a child of God, a pilgrim in this earthly land. For the true believer, there is no longer “Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female”.

Paul exclaimed,

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.   -   Galatians 2:20

Do not be deceived, dear Remnant! Do not let the world, the flesh, or the enemy cause you to give up so great a position and throw you into its churning brew of division and accusation. Your new life in Christ is your identity. Don’t sell it out and lower it to number two or three or four in your life. It is by far your number one because there is nothing more significant than being united with Christ. Here is found true peace and contentment. Here is found true faith and hope and love. Here is found true salvation and rest for your soul.

Who? Who are you?

When Infants Invade Adult Bodies
On Election Day, at lunchtime, I was at a park in Colorado Springs. On one corner of the park sits one of our big high schools. It was a nice day (normal for the Springs) and the students filled the park, several making out lying on the grass. On the opposite corner stood a young man, conservatively dressed, holding an American flag and a Trump sign. He had a radio on the ground, not very loud, but playing a conservative talk show. I sat at a bench near the young man because I was curious about what I saw happening. As the students walked by, they shouted obscenities at him and Trump. I am not willing to repeat any of it, suffice to say it was as filthy and vile as you can get. Some spit toward him. As it was getting close to the end of their lunch hour, a group gathered in front of him and pummeled him with profanity and obscene gestures. One girl was screaming at him. I suppose even worse was that after they would shout their obscenities, they would then howl in laughter pointing at him as if he were a joke. Of course, in the world of child-like behavior, this is considered the cruelest of all taunts… to make another seem like a worthless outcast… insignificant scum. Although I couldn’t hear what the young man was saying, he remained calm and would sometimes turn and wave at cars that would supportively “beep-beep” as they drove by. As I write this, I’m not sure if I was right or wrong to not jump into the middle of it. I was committed to offer help if it looked like it was going to escalate beyond words, but for now it was free-speech being played out, though admittedly disgusting. After the lunch crowd had returned to their classrooms, I approached the young man and our conversation went something like this: “Students were pretty rough on you.” “Yeah. A lot of nasty stuff.” “I’m impressed you remained calm through all of it.” “Well, I kept telling them that obscenities didn’t add to the conversation and just encouraged any of them to simply enter into a civil discussion with me.” “I’m sorry they didn’t do that.” “Me too. I really wish we could just talk about the issues like adults.” I think it was the “adult” word that helped frame some of this for me. I had, indeed, witnessed deep immaturity, with its pure emotional spewing and little to no rational thought. I don’t go to the park all the time, but I’m there enough to occasionally hear their conversations. I remember one of the first times, next to a group of high school girls, in which I was dumbfounded at the filth of their language. I spent over 20 years in the military, and I’d never heard anything that matched it. Where does this come from? My heart sank as I experienced what was happening Tuesday. It was quite scary, actually, because I was not only looking at such deep expressions of hate and loathing, but I was also looking at the generation that is going to replace us all. It didn’t look good. We woke this morning to the continued news that there are protests all around the country. Some have become violent and destructive. Interestingly, the chants of the protestors are much like those I heard in the park… quite childish, selfish and filled with hatred. Where is all of this coming from? In the park, my first thoughts were to put the blame on the high school that was right on the corner, thinking that this was coming from their classrooms. But then something dawned on me after reading the list of “tweets” that went out from Hollywood and TV and music “stars”. They were all saying the same things, in “star” lingo, of course, but just as childish. This is Cher’s mature tweet on the election: “Trump will never be more than a toilet…” Andy Cohen (along with all the other late-night talk show hosts): “Did we just elect a snake oil salesman and his wicked court of terror…?” Snoop Dogg: “The worst day in America: 9/11. The second worst day: 11/9.” Really? Worse than the Civil War? Worse than the trail of tears? Worse that Kennedy’s assassination… or Pearl Harbor or the stock market crash in 1929? This is the mindless mantra of our “entertainment” empire. And it is here we find the prime tutor of our children. The average teen consumes 9 hours a day of entertainment on their smartphone or TV. You may want to reread that or say it over to yourself: 9 hours per day of smartphone/TV entertainment. This domain of music, rap, video, shows, comedy, movies and gaming is cultivating a mind that is filled with sex, violence, obscene language and destructive ideas. It numbs them towards a true reality. It strips them of common sense. It erects in their heart, mind and soul a virtual world of all-about-me and my pleasure. And if things don’t go my way, I throw my tantrums. I call people names. I stomp my feet and chant emotional non-sense. And I demand. Like the 3-year-old girl I saw the other day stomping her feet, screaming at her mother, demanding her own way. For 9 hours a day, our youth live in a non-real world where lyrics and scripts and rap words rhythmically and cinematically draw them into believing that the virtual world of the entertainment empire is the world we all ought to live in… the world we WANT to live in. It seduces. It hypnotizes. It frames a worldview that is totally self-centered and hedonistic. And it is totally irrational. It spews out the most hateful and vile stuff. It beats up people, destroys property, flips off the world and then smugly chants “love trumps hate”. It is the la-la land of infants demanding to get their own way in their self-defined, virtual world. The problem is that the infants are increasingly in adult bodies with lots of power. Our addiction to entertainment will continue to stunt our culture's maturity. We must wean ourselves and our kids. Here is what troubles me most, however. Immaturity, when it doesn’t get its way, will often erupt into a “make you pay” rage. I sense that is what we are seeing. But I fear it is only the beginning. We are going to be treated to a host of "See what you made me do!" and "This is all your fault!" and "You'll be sorry!" acts and situations and new stories and personal stories, ad infinitim. Brace yourselves, for the revenge of self-centered infants who live in adult bodies and carry great wealth and power can, and will be, be scary.

Cultural Leprosy
Just when you thought our culture couldn’t get any crazier, we now have a 47-year-old father of seven who wants to be identified as a six-year-old girl. But the really crazy thing is that our culture is gushing over him. Why? Well, it’s primarily because of the Covenant of Tolerance, where we discard the notion of absolute, transcendent Truth, substitute the individual as it’s source, and then affirm each other’s absolute right to follow our heart. The Covenant then says that I will affirm you if you will affirm me. And we are going to affirm ourselves into a cultural abyss. By affirming the increasingly absurd, we are hoping that we will, in turn, be affirmed in our own absurdity, our own self-centered desires…so that nothing can be denied us…no desire, no want, no need…absolutely nothing can be called into question because there is no absolute truth, only individual truth. And the Covenant assures that we will affirm each other...a solidarity of self-centeredness, if you will. This leads us to see pathology as healthy, selfishness as praiseworthy, and evil as individual righteousness. This is cultural leprosy. We can no longer feel pain--a natural sense of danger; no longer feel when our hand is on the hot stove; no longer hear or see the warnings of lies and evil. We have made a Covenant to hear no wrong, see no wrong, speak that there is no wrong. Cultural leprosy will lead to death. Over time, each evil and lie that we close our eyes and ears and voices to, kills another part of our culture until we become the walking dead. We may still exist, but as a culture, we are dead. We will have literally destroyed ourself through selfish stupidity. So now we applaud Paul Woscht, ('please call me Stefonkee'), who has left his wife and family and has been embraced by an affirming Covenant family who has taken him in as a 6-year-old girl. He dresses in dresses and colors and no doubt plays house with his new “mummy and daddy’s” grandchildren. And to call this insane or deranged, demented or loony, or just plain sinful to abandon one's family for selfish desire, is to be called hateful, bigoted, narrow-minded, and trans-phobic. Because we have become cultural lepers. I would call you again, Remnant, to join together to pray for repentance, Tuesday, noon eastern. Put it on your calendar. Pray that the Lord would strike us all with repentance that we might come to our senses and escape from the trap of the devil who has taken us captive to do his will.  And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:24-26
